The sobering facts
America needs far more power than it is building. Most of that new power starts with a gas well. The workforce that drills them is half the size it was in 2014. Yet that same workforce is expected to double production due to skyrocketing energy demand - and the people who could refill it are not on their way.

Those numbers say the same thing from two directions. The experts who built this industry are retiring, and the replacements are not in the pipeline. So the answer is not more hands, because there are none to hire; it is to let a smaller expert workforce direct more work, one driller guiding many automated operations instead of one rig. That is the basic math.

Half the hands and twice the work. There is only one way to close that gap: machines let one expert run what ten used to. But automation requires tool transparency - a machine can only run a tool it can fully describe. This is not a forecast. The money is already moving: upstream digital and AI spend is $25B today and heads to $50B by 2035, by Rystad Energy's count. And the machines that money bought are not on a drawing board - they are already in the field, each with a name and a date.

Five shipped systems: PACE-R801, LOGIX, Octiv, Oseberg H and Fervo - each one has already run in the field.
Look at what those five have in common. A rig drilled a section with nobody on the floor, a well corrected itself, a frac fleet sequenced its own pumps, a platform produces with no one aboard, and a geothermal well was drilled in twenty-one days. The robots are already here - and none of them can talk to each other.
