Start with four automation systems that are running today. SmartROS, LOGIX, Neuro and Octiv each automate inside their own walls. Every arrow points inward and nothing crosses. That language is OSDU. OSDU is one standard for wells, logs, seismic and production. The WITSML thread you already touch is part of it. But this filing system describes data, never machines - and to see how much that leaves uncovered, lay the whole well chain out from start to finish.

The whole chain, one missing layer
From start to finish, a well passes through five phase bands and twenty-eight block classes. Above that chain runs the data track, and below it runs the machine track. The data side is covered. The machine side isn't - and that empty track, running the length of the whole chain, is the missing layer.
The fragmented machine layer
That missing layer is not blank ground. It is a patchwork of standards that were never designed to agree: OSDU describes stored data, WITSML moves wellsite data, OPC-UA speaks to rig control systems, and every vendor's tools carry their own dialects. A human engineer reconciles these in their head every day. A machine cannot - and automation is coming whether the vocabularies agree or not.
